Production Research

Media- TV drama Project
In the first ever episode of 'The Inbetweeners', the boys start off at the school, as there is the establishing shot of the schools name and slogan. The next shot is of Will as the new kid walking into school by himself, this connotes loneliness after leaving his old school and turning up at a new on where he doesn't know anyone or have any friends.

The boys are aged 17 to 18 years of age. Whilst they are in the school Jay, Simon and Neil are all wearing the appropriate school uniform, but the new boy to the school 'Will' turns up wearing a black suit, with black trousers and posh shoes. which is used to show he has never been to the college before and doesn't have the uniform. This is an anti-stereotype as many boys that don't have the uniform would turn up to the college wearing casual clothing, like a t-shirt, jeans and trainers.

The main girl in the scene is also wearing school uniform, however she has the top three buttons of her shirt undone and she is also wearing a very short skirt. Carly in this scene because of how she is dresses is seen as a sex object towards the boys as the clothes she wears suggest that she is trying to get male attention. In one shot used Carly is standing up whilst Simon (the boy that fancies her) is sitting down on a chair, this could be used to show that Carly has power over him, and suggest he will do whatever she tells him to.

There are also two close-ups, one of Neil's face and the other of  Jays face. This is the classic schoolboy look/stare when your 'best mate' is getting the attention of the hottest girl in the school.
They look completely shocked that Simon is getting female attention and not either one of them as Jay always see himself as the better looking one of the group.

This could also be seen as jealously as after ten seconds, Jay starts taking the mick out of him. The lighting in both shots is ambient which it what would be expected in a school. These shots connote the shock of the boys as the most popular girl is talking to a member of their group.

The majority of the shots are of either Neil, Simon, Jay or Will, this shows that these are the main characters and that the show is basically all about them four. They all have about the same screen time so there is no way to know if there is a main character within these four, but it is also seen that girls are going to play a crucial part in the rest of the television series, which means that they could even be seen as main characters, not just the boys.

Media- Film opening scene: Olympus has fallen

In the first scene of the film Olympus has fallen their is an establishing shot which shows the presidents house which is covered in snow, this connotes that the film is set either in a country where snow is the norm or that the film is set during the winter, when the weather is generally colder.

In one of the first scenes the president is seen boxing with what seems to be a friend, but turns outs being a work colleague, during this scene there is a match on action, which shows the president being punched in the face and then falling into the corner of the ring. During the presidents boxing match there is a close-up shot on the presidents face which is straight after he has been punched in the stomach. The shot shows the expression on the presidents face, which shows that the president is in pain.

In this shot their are two men with guns, fully dressed in white, this is so that they blend in with the snow as they don't want to be spotted. The fact that they are patrolling the house connotes that the people inside are important and need lots of protection.

During on of the scenes Mike Banning, one of the presidents colleagues knocks on his door to tell him he has five minutes till he is needed. During this Mike is asked by the presidents wife which earrings she should wear, and he gives an answer with a in-depth analyse, and then the president turns round and says 'kiss ass', this shows the friendly nature between president and colleague, this could connote that they have been friends for a long time.

During the film opening there are numerous shot which show the people inside of the house. Everyone inside of the house are wearing suits which connotes they are in a high income job and have to look smart and posh for it. As everyone is wearing a suit/something smart it connotes that the job is protection for someone who is very important in the world. There is also a scene in the film opening where the family are in a room and there is a Christmas tree and lots of Christmas lights making the room full of high-key lighting. This allows everything in the room to stand out.
There is diegetic sound whilst the president and his colleague are having a boxing match, The diegetic grunts as the president has been hit sound more emphasised as the non-diegetic music becomes more quite as he is hit. This connotes that the president is in pain as he is grunting quite loud. During the opening scene the phase 'Mr President' is used often, this connotes that he has power over everyone in the house. The Mr also shows that he is of great importance to people.

There is another close-up shot of the presidents son after Mike Banning switches off his video game, the expression on his face shows him as quite annoyed, showing he wanted to carry on playing however during this scene he says 'Yes Sir' which suggests that he knows that he shouldn't be playing the game.
Media -Film opening: Fast and Furious 6
At the start of the film there are many establishing shots which show the scene being set on a road, on one side of the road there is a massive rocky mountain and the other side of the road shows the sea, which connotes that they are on a remote island.
There is also a match on action which shows Brian put his clutch down, change gear and then the next shot is on the rev meter getting less revs.
During the opening scene there is a close-up shot of Brian's face as he hears the car next to him rev loud which connotes that he is going to be overtaken, the expression on Brian's face also connotes that he knows that he is going to be overtaken, straight after this shot, Brian is overtaken.
After the race scene the cars stop and there is a close-up shot of a nurses face as she starts to shout, 'quick, quick', the expression on her face suggests that she is desperate for Brian to follow her quickly and her dialogue suggests that even more.
During the race there is the diegetic sound of high-pitch stretching, this is seen when the two cars are seen drifting around the corner at high speed, this connotes that both drivers professional drivers and know what they are doing behind the wheel. The fact that they are drifting round the corners connotes they are trying to get somewhere as quick as they can, or it could suggest that they are racing each other.
During the race scene there is some non-diegetic upbeat music, which gets quieter when the tyres of the car are stretching on the road and when the cars are revving up to overtake each other.
The setting which the film opening is set in has only a couple of houses/villas which  suggests that they are racing around a country in debt which is generally abandoned, This suggests that they are racing around a country like Greece or Spain, and soon after this race scene they arrive at a hospital, and at the bottom of there screen it says 'Spain'
The two main characters are wearing casual clothes which suggests that they are not of high income but have a lot of style.

Media film opening- Skyfall

One of the first shots we see in the film ‘Skyfall’ is a long shot as James Bond enters, but changes to a close up as the action increases. At the start no one can tell who the person is as all we see is a shadowy figure at the end of a corridor. In this shot the figure is standing in the middle of the camera, so using rule of thirds, we can determine that the character is of great significance to the film. The figure is also standing in front of a glass window which fills that bottom part of the corridor with light, this connotes that the character is also a ‘Good Guy’. As the character comes close to the camera, light appears on their face, allowing the audience to know the identity of the character, and anyone who had watched a recent James Bond film to realise that it is in fact the protagonist himself. This sequence ends with James Bond (Daniel Craig) holding up a gun near to his face, making the audience think that he is about to be in a fight scene.
The next shot is a tracking shot which sees the camera as it follows James Bond down the rest of the corridor to a slightly open door. There is a lot of light coming from the open door which connotes that there could be someone in there. James Bond is still holding up his gun which connotes that there could be danger behind the door. As he nears the light the first thing that is seen is the gun which connotes that it is a very important prop in the scene. The light in the corridor is minimal to none which means that James Bond cannot be seen as he blends in with the shadow.
The first sequence of James Bond, Skyfall is where James Bond is walking down a massive, long corridor. When James Bond is seen properly for the first time, the shot duration is long as he has a worried look on his face like he has just seen something that could put him in danger. The shot has a long duration to show the audience that he could be scared or gearing himself up for battle. This is where he is holding up his gun connoting to the audience that he may have to use it soon.
The speed of the piece increases as James Bond enters the room at the end of the corridor, this connotes that danger is a foot and James Bond knows it. It also shows the concern that James Bond holds for people, as he has just seen the bodies on the floor and then rushes to the dying body in the chair. The speed is increased so that it shows James Bonds urgency to help people.

In the film ‘Skyfall’, James Bond is wearing suit, this connotes that he has a professional job, paying him a high salary as he appears to be working in the suit which means that he wears suits on a daily basis. The jacket which he appears to be wearing over the shirt is a dark colour which connotes that he is trying to blend in with the shadows and not get caught doing his business. It’s not however just his suit that portrays his high social class, but also how James Bond walks and talks as this connotes that he knows he has power over a lot of people.
The setting for the opening of the scene is in a massive building with lots of rooms almost like a hotel. It could be set in a hotel as that allows the antagonist plenty of places to hide. The setting is very stereotypical of other action and adventure genre films as the building is very dark, which creates a certain atmosphere about the place, and also leaves lots of opportunity for jump scares for the characters in the film. It is also very stereotypical because the building seem to have a lot of corners and turns that the protagonist must make before getting the room they need to get to. This increases the suspense as the audience are waiting for when the antagonist(s) is going to jump out and start attacking the protagonist.

There non-diegetic sound as James Bond nears the room increases with suspense as a harp starts playing, but as the camera points to the dead bodies the sound gets quicker as an electronic beat is added. As James Bond enters the room away from the bodies suspense grows again until he realises that the people who he is fighting had gone. This is then met with the ambient sound of a car honking its horn and the engines of motorbikes. The non-diegetic music is then a backing sound as the ambient sound of the outdoors is overpowering.
The other sound in the scene is dialogue between James Bond and someone unknown to the audience. The unknown person sounds very posh so one can only assume that she is of high status and class. She also sounds very rushed as her lines in the scene are quick without any hesitation, the phrase ‘Leave him’ when James to tending to someone who has been shot suggests that she is desperate for something and need James Bond to hurry up, this is also heard by the fact that she shout the phrase ‘Leave him’ very angrily.

Target Audience
There are many different sub-genres within the genre Thriller. Each different sub-genre also appeals to different audiences, however many-to-all of the thrillers include crime which is almost in defiantly followed by violence. The thriller genre is almost the same as action/adventure, as they share common conventions. Most thriller movies also use intelligence, which generally allow the protagonist to win over the antagonist. The means that the target audience is generally teenagers and adults as they are most likely to understand what is happening in the film.
Horror thrillers
Some popular horror thrillers are films like ‘Women in Black’ and ‘House at the end of the street’. These film normally contain mass amounts of horror, so they aren’t the best films for young children. Older adults are also seen to not like horror that much, this is because of the amount of gore that they normally include. The people who normally watch the horror genre are teenagers. People like to watch horror films because of the psychological issues within the film

Action thrillers
There are many popular action thriller films for example, Bourne identity trilogy and James Bond. These films also consist of mass amounts of violence. People like action thriller because they normally contain long fight scenes, which are normally well choreographed by the directors. These kind of films are stereotypically watched by men within the age bracket 15-40, as they are normally into all the violence.

Conspiracy thriller
These kind of films often contain a protagonist who is the only one who believes something and needs the other people to know, but has the hardship of no-one believing him because what the protagonist believes often sound far fetched. For instance in the film 'Unknown' the protagonist is involved in a car accident and ends up in a coma, after he wakes up he finds that someone ha taken his identity and no-one know who he is and no-one will believe him. His objective in the film is to get his identity back and figure out what has happened.

Crime Thriller
Crime thriller are often based around a crime however they normally involve unrealistic amounts of it. Normal crime films often have one killing scene and then the rest is the police or investigator trying to figure out who the killer is. Crime thrillers are more far fetched and involve numerous murders and some spying to get the culprit. Normally in crime thriller films the investigators get some information about the killer and end up catching the wrong person due to the incorrect information. There is also a chance that the main protagonist isn't anything to do with the law but someone out for revenge.

Our film is going to be an action thriller. This is because we want the opening to show bits of violence, but not too much that it would become a horror. As our production is a thriller, it is likely to appeal to the younger adult audience. Our film will also be more aimed towards men as they are more likely to watch thriller compared to women.

As can be seen from this graph, most of the people I asked in the questionnaire were 10 to 18 year olds, this is because, as we cannot do a 18+ film are audience would be more into thriller films. Are film will involve no swearing so it would probably by for an audience over the age of 12. We didn’t really ask many over 50 as they are unlikely to watch these kind of films.

In our questionnaire we needed to find out what people thought they would see in a thriller movie. The answers that we received were that they most common thing people expect to see is near death experiences and guns. Although people voted car chases, it didn’t get enough compared to the others. We also talked about it and said that car chases would normally be seen in the middle of thriller films, however there are films where chases are at the start, for example the film Taken. Also our actors are 16 and 17 years old, so a chase in cars probably isn’t the best thing to do. We also said that we could only put explosions in the opening using special effects. We again decided that explosions happen in the major fight in the middle/nearing the end of the film. Using this graph and other people’s opinions we have decided to have gun and have conflict in our movie opening. We are not having a near death experience as there are seen more during the middle of the film, when everyone thinks that the protagonist has the upper hand.

This graph suggests that the people whom filled out the questionnaire think that the start of a thriller film has fast paced and suspenseful music. Our idea is to start the piece with slow music as the protagonist is first seen, then the soundtrack will get more suspenseful when are protagonist is looking at the ‘drug lords’ and has a chance of getting spotted. When our protagonist is getting nearer to the house where the antagonists are the soundtrack will become faster paced

This pie chart shows that the people who filled out the questionnaire. They suggest that the hit man should be wearing clothes which are smart like a suit or a shirt. This is because they are professional people within their field of work. The participants of the questionnaire said the hit man should also wear dark clothing, so a suit would be perfect.

Production companies

Warner Bros are another film corporation is a media film company which makes films, television show and music videos. There are many sub companies within the Warner Bros brand, these include; Warner Bros: Animation, Warner: Interactive entertainment, Warner: Home Video, New line cinema, Castle Rock entertainment and DC entertainment. Warner Bros have distributed films such as the ‘Dark Knight and ‘The HangOver’ they have also distributed the very popular franchise ‘Harry Potter’. The colour and font of the Warner Bros logo changes depending on the type of film being shown, for example the logo before the ‘Harry Potter’ films is dark with lightning in it.  For family films the Warner Bros logo is the normal light blue and gold but when the films they've distributed is a horror for instance, the background of the logo will be black and the Warner Bros logo itself will be grey or a dark colour like grey. This means that the Warner Bros don't cater for a certain audience/distribute certain genres.

20th century fox are a production company, and one of the major film studios in American. They have distributed successful films like ‘Die Hard’ and ‘The Simpson’s Movie’. The 20th century fox theme is very iconic and noticeable to many, the theme also comes with a fanfare which is very noticeable. The fanfare in the theme connotes that the film deserves a royal entrance.  The most popular films ever to be distributed by 20th century fox are ‘Avatar’ (2009) and ‘Titanic’ (1997). They have also been the film corporation for the successful franchise, ‘Star Wars’. Many of the films that this corporation have distributed are films for the whole family. The 20th century fox opening rarely changes for the genre being shown, but on the odd occasion, they've changed he opening to have something to do with the film which is about to be played, for example for 'The Simpsons' movie the opening tune/fanfare is sung by one of the characters from the Simpsons.

Metro Goldwyn Mayer is an American media company which generally are involved in the production and distribution of television shows and films. This company are one of the oldest media companies around after being created in 1924 however they were declared bankrupt in the year 2010. Metro Goldwyn Mayer have produced successful films like ‘Sky Fall’ and the franchise ‘The Hobbit’.  Most of the films produced by Metro Goldwyn Mayer have been action/adventure films and comedies, this means that the company produces films for the whole family to watch. This production company is known by the roaring lion which appears before the start of every film.

These are some other popular production companies. After looking at these I know that most if not all production companies include either the word 'Pictures', 'Studios', 'Entertainment' or 'Animation', this means to make my production company more realistic i will have to use these words at the end.
